these days i understand far better that marking that annual milestone is indeed a good thing — it's easy to be complacent about one's mortality, in that it's easy to put such thoughts out of mind... we all die one day, however, so it behoves us to celebrate the very fact that we're not dead, as we are, in that sense, so much more lucky than all those poor buggers who haven't managed to clock up another year...
